The first World Petroleum Congress (WPC) was held in London in 1933. The congresses provide a forum for discussing the issues facing the oil and gas industry on a worldwide basis and are strictly nonpolitical. The WPC is dedicated to the application of scientific advances in the oil and gas industries, to technology transfer and to the use of the world's petroleum resources for the benefit of mankind.

The WPC's 62 member countries produce and consume over 90% of the world's oil and gas production. Each country has a national committee comprising, or with input from, representatives of all phases of the oil and gas industry and other participating sectors such as academia, research institutions and government departments. Attendance at the congresses is open to all and over 90 countries are usually represented.

The congresses, held regularly over the last 70 years, have traditionally covered all aspects of the industry from exploration to downstream activities. Recent congresses have increased the emphasis on petroleum finance, management, societal and environmental issues.
