The 12th annual Ignite Talks – the premier event for young professionals in the energy sector – returns on November 26, 2026. This year's theme, Canada's Energy Advantage: From Resources to Global Markets, unpacks the strengths that position Canada to thrive in a rapidly evolving global energy landscape. Through dynamic discussion and meaningful connection, the event explores the pillars of Canada's competitive edge – spanning investment competitiveness, resource development, critical infrastructure, and access to global markets. Designed for emerging leaders, aspiring innovators, and those looking to expand their professional network, Ignite Talks delivers invaluable insights from thought leaders alongside direct connections with peers passionate about the future of energy.

Presenters

Jeff Lawson

Jeff Lawson

As Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development and a member of Cenovus’s executive team, Jeff is responsible for contributing to the company’s long-term strategy through capital allocation decisions which might include strategic acquisitions and divestitures. Jeff also ensures sustainability considerations are embedded in the company’s business plans. This includes overseeing stakeholder engagement with Indigenous communities, governments and community partners. Jeff has extensive experience in domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, investments and corporate restructurings. Prior to joining Cenovus in 2023, Jeff spent 15 years at Peters & Co. Limited and was Managing Director of the Corporate Finance group and a member of the Executive Committee. Before Peters & Co., Jeff spent 14 years as a securities lawyer at the law firm of Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP (BD&P), where he was co-head of the Securities Group and a member of the Executive Committee. During his tenure at BD&P, Jeff was recognized as one of Canada’s most creative lawyers as well as a top cross-border corporate lawyer. Jeff has served on the board of directors at a number of public and private companies, and charitable organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta.
Fab Chiacchia

Fabrizio (Fab) Chiacchia

Fab is currently the Vice President of New Ventures at Pembina Pipeline Corporation, a leading energy infrastructure company in North America. At Pembina he is responsible for ‘building new platforms for growth’ in the New Ventures Division. These platforms include LNG, chemical and energy hubs, and opportunities in emerging lower-carbon economy. Fab has held leadership positions across industries ranging from medical technology to energy infrastructure in North America over the last 20 years. He holds an MBA from Queen’s in Kingston Ontario, a Masters and Bachelors in the sciences from Calgary, and a PMP designation. Fab is an active member in the S.T.E.M. community, has been awarded the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award, was a Delegate of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference, and is a Mentor for the Creative Destruction Lab.
Jamie Heard

Jamie Heard

Jamie was recently appointed to be Tourmaline’s CFO, effective November 1st. Tourmaline is the largest natural gas producer in Canada and amongst the most profitable gas E&P’s in North America. Jamie joined Tourmaline in 2019 after a decade investing in and covering energy companies in banking, research and investing roles at Barclays, BMO, Citadel and Castleton. As Chief Financial Officer, Jamie oversees finance, capital allocation, investor relations and strategy. An advocate for natural gas, Jamie regularly shares his perspective through industry panels, podcasts, and X. He advises the next generation of finance professionals as a mentor to the Carleton and UofC student investment funds and the Calgary CFA society; he is also a regular volunteer in youth hockey. Jamie holds a Master’s in Finance from the University of Rochester, a Bachelor of Finance & Economics from Carleton University, and is a CFA Charterholder.
Ian Nieboer

Ian Nieboer

Ian Nieboer is Managing Director and Head of Power and Energy Transition Intelligence at Enverus, where he built the power and energy transition research practice and leads teams covering electricity markets, data centers, and emerging energy technologies. His career spans operating engineering, global oil and gas research, macro analysis, and the development of energy data and analytics businesses. He brings that experience to explaining how physical assets, market forces, and technology shape investment decisions. He is a CBC contributor and speaks regularly to executives, investors, and policymakers. Ian is a CFA charter holder and Professional Engineer and holds an MBA from IESE Business School.
