WPC Canada announces Canada’s bid to host the 2023 WPC

WPC Canada announces Canada’s bid to host the 2023 World Petroleum Congress with the city of Calgary as the candidate host city.

The World Petroleum Congress is one of the world’s largest oil and gas forum, attracting delegates from over 100 countries. Events like these contribute over $1.3 trillion CAD in economic impact globally.

“Canada is one of the top five energy-producing nations in the world, and Calgary is the centre of resource development in Canada,” says Denis Painchaud, Chairman of WPC Canada. “The Canadian oil and gas industry is a leader in implementing several sustainable resource development practices,” says Painchaud, adding that, “our leading-edge technologies can be adopted to address global challenges,”.

Hosting the 24th WPC will directly benefit Calgary through more than an estimated $65 million CAD economic injection.

The host city will be decided on June 25th by WPC member countries in St. Petersburg, Russia. Deron Bilous, Alberta’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, is proud to support WPC Canada. “Calgary is home to the energy leaders the world needs for the 21st century – and the biggest international players are taking notice,” says Bilous. “Bringing the world to our city is an opportunity to continue building business relationships that diversify our markets, create jobs and help grow our economy.”

Calgary’s business leaders agree that the congress will grow partnerships. “The Calgary Stampede is excited to work with partner hotels, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, The City of Calgary, and Meetings + Conventions Calgary,” says Greg Newton, Calgary Stampede’s Director of Business Development.

Clark Grue, President of Meetings + Conventions Calgary says, “This congress will activate the BMO Centre, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, and engage thousands of volunteers within the city.”

Calgary has a proven track record of hosting international events including the 2000 World Petroleum Congress, the 2013 World Petroleum Council Future Leaders Forum, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists 2016 Annual Convention, the annual Global Petroleum Show and the upcoming 2019 Society of Petroleum Engineers Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition.

Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi says, “There is no better city to host the World Petroleum Congress than Calgary. We inherently understand the energy industry, and have decades of experience hosting major events. We are thrilled to welcome the world to Calgary for the WPC, and showcase our innovative, entrepreneurial and creative spirit.”
