WPC Background
Joining in 1957, WPC Energy Canada has been a member of WPC Energy for nearly 70 years. Our parent organization, WPC Energy was formed almost 100 years ago in 1933, and is recognized as an independent, non-advocacy, non-political organization, accredited by the United Nations as a non-governmental agency (NGO).
Today we are one of 60 WPC Energy member countries representing more than 96 percent of the world’s energy production and consumption. WPC Energy’s flagship event is the biennial WPC Energy Congress which boasts a typical attendance of 15,000 people.
Mantra
WPC Energy Canada aims to provide reliable, inclusive guidance toward an effective energy future while supporting and promoting Canada’s reputation as a responsible global energy source. We provide a platform for informed discussions and inclusive, constructive debate based on verifiable facts and data to find the most effective and efficient way to achieve a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future.
The world agrees that energy demand will continue to increase indefinitely due to: growing computing needs from artificial intelligence and other technologies; alleviating energy poverty for 750 million people without reliable access to energy; and improving energy security for global jurisdictions that have experienced disruptions to supply due to ongoing geopolitical challenges.
Pillars of Connection
1: Connect Canada to the World
Focusing on promoting Canadian energy, and clean energy technologies, to the globe. It involves sharing Canada’s expertise in responsible energy production and bringing international best practices back home, through a worldwide network of energy partners.
2: Foster National Conversation
Build unity and understanding within Canada. It involves hosting events and forums across the country to bring together industry, government, Indigenous communities, and the public, for evidence-based discussions about our energy future.
3: Secure Global Investment
Draw and keep foreign investment in Canada’s energy sector. This is done by actively promoting Canada as a stable and attractive place to invest and by directly connecting international investors with Canadian businesses and technology.
Support
We support policies that help Canada build the energy and clean technology infrastructure it needs for the benefit of all Canadians. Our focus is on ensuring these projects can supply both Canadian and global markets. To achieve this, Canada must create a streamlined regulatory system where projects receive a decision within two years.
We also believe every project must meet key conditions: it must be economically viable, managed effectively to stay on schedule and budget, and create real partnerships with Indigenous communities.
How we operate
We are a not-for-profit, non political, organization led by 16 volunteers and self funded through a variety of events focused on energy topics. These events include convening expert panels with differing perspectives on government policy, and trade barriers, women in energy, and the role of energy in Canadian society with a global perspective.
In addition to our Canadian events, WPC Energy organizes the biennial WPC Energy Congress which, with a typical attendance of over 15,000, provides a neutral and inclusive platform to debate and define realistic, workable paths to a net zero future. The event brings together thought leaders from across the global energy industry including Heads of State, Ministers, CEOs, Presidents and Heads of International Organisations, as well as engineers, academics and the NGO community.
What can you do
Since we are a not-for-profit with a goal to inform and convene, the best way you can support our current efforts and future goals is through corporate memberships, event sponsorship and individual event attendance. These three avenues are our sole sources of revenue and help fund our operations. We aim to speak more broadly on behalf of Canadian energy and your support creates additional pathways for us to achieve that.
