Jim McFarland has more than 43 years of domestic and international experience in the oil and gas industry, most recently as President, CEO and director of Valeura Energy Inc., an international oil and gas company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange with operations in Turkey. Prior to co-founding Valeura in April 2010, he was President, CEO, director and co-founder of Verenex Energy Inc., a successful oil and gas explorer in Libya, which was sold to the Libyan Investment Authority in December 2009. He previously served in a number of senior executive roles including Managing Director of Southern Pacific Petroleum NL in Australia, President and Chief Operating Officer of Husky Oil Limited in Canada and a wide range of upstream and corporate functions in an earlier 23-year career with Imperial Oil Limited and other ExxonMobil affiliates in Canada, the United States and Western Europe. He is also a past director of several public and private entities including Aventura Energy Inc., Exxon Production Research Co., Syncrude Canada Ltd., Vermilion Energy Trust and Vermilion Resources Ltd.
Mr. McFarland is currently a director of two other listed companies, MEG Energy Corp. and Pengrowth Energy Corporation, and serves on the Program Committee of the World Petroleum Council and the board of the World Petroleum Council Canada. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, the Society of Petroleum Engineers International and the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Mr. McFarland received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University in 1970, a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1974, completed the Executive Development Program at Cornell University in 1981 and received the designation of Professional Engineer in 1974.
In 2003 Mr. McFarland was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for outstanding service through business and commerce.
